Event Overview

Just like the other economic sectors hit by a global downturn, the global carbon market is in a state of uncertainty. According to reports from a reputable carbon market consultant, the carbon market was worth more than $100 billion in year 2008, an increase of more than 80% from previous year, with estimated of 4 billion emission units traded. Meanwhile, the number of registered projects has increased tremendously with a total of 1421 projects registered and more than 3000 projects in the pipeline requesting for review or at the validation process by host parties. If all these projects delivered the CERs as promised, they are expected to generate more than 2.9 billion CERs until the end of 2012.

In accordance to the trading of carbon credits generated, the contribution of carbon projects towards climate change and sustainable development is undoubtedly vital for local communities and governmental concerns. The theme is in line with the fast-paced and dynamic business environment where carbon emission is a critical issue to be tackled by all developed countries. There is also a crucial need to boost energy and sustainable development in developing nations with innovative clean technology.

This event brings together CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) developers, investors and carbon traders from across Asia Pacific region for benchmarking and networking for broader business opportunities.

Background

Asia Pacific countries are in the frontline for CDM project development with China and India as two of the most favoured destinations of CDM globally. Based on the CDM statistics from UNFCCC, Asia Pacific region contributes to a major part of project registered with nearly 1000 project from a total of 1421 projects.

As per 26 February 2009 (statistics from UNFCCC), India alone contributes to 27.8% of total CDM projects registered (395 projects) with China taking over India at the first place with 431 projects registered. Following behind is Brazil with 150 projects registered.

The potential of developing new carbon project in these Asian countries is huge as the government of these countries have been emphasising on sustainable development of their nations. Thus, this allows investors with clean and greener technology to invest and share their innovation to the local communities while at the same time meeting the emission cap in Annex I countries.
